• Desert Island Discs (BBC from 29 January). Devised by Roy Plomley, the format invites a guest to pick eight records, a book (the Bible and Shakespeare are provided) and a luxury. It is still running weekly in 2008.

• Casablanca, starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, premiered in New York (26 November).
Audio
• On February 10 sales of Glenn Miller's Chattanooga Choo Choo reach 1m copies in less than a year. RCA Victor presents Miller with a commemorative gold disc.
