New shows
Steptoe and Son (BBC, from June). Comedy by Alan Simpson and Ray Galton. First series of five episodes, based on a one-off episode of Comedy Playhouse transmitted on 5 January 1962. Runs until 1965, revived 1970-1974.
That Was the Week That Was (BBC, from November 24). Late evening satirical programme.
University Challenge (Granada Television for the ITV Network, from 24 September). Quiz show. Runs until 31 December 1987 and is then revived from 21 September 1994 on BBC2, continuing to be produced by Granada. Still running in 2008.
Z Cars (BBC, from 2 January). Gritty northern police series.

Film
In a British Film Institute decennial poll, film critics vote Orson Welles' Citizen Kane the best film of all time. Michelangelo Antonioni's L'Avventura and Jean Renoir's La Rθgle du Jeu are in second and third places, followed by Erich von Stroheim's Greed and Kenji Mizoguchi's Ugestsu Monogatari in joint fourth place.
