In the early days, television was an activity for enthusiasts ('experimenters') who built their own receivers, just as radio had been a decade earlier. To capitalise on this and to extend the potential audience for their programmes , Baird Television Ltd (the company formed in May) began producing kits. This one cost £7 12s 6d (£7.63) and was sufficient to receive the test broadcasts that had begun the previous year.
