The future

Tim Berners-Lee, Pioneer of the World Wide Web, said in July 1997, 'If we know what the future is, we aren’t looking far enough ahead.'

A recent analysis noted that 80 per cent of technological predictions are wrong. The Quotations department has many statements about the future, made in the past, some of them about times that have already arrived. The recent analysis may well be right.

However, some forecasts are just plain entertaining, whether they prove right or wrong. Like Warren Bennis, Professor of Business Administration at the University of Southern California: 'The factory of the future will have only two employees, a man and a dog. The man will be there to feed the dog. The dog will be there to keep the man from touching the equipment.'
