NBC takes the US television rights for $87m and transmits 150 hours, even though the USA boycotted the Games because of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. (ABC paid $15.5m for the Lake Placid Winter Games, generating 54 hours of programming.) Twenty television feeds are provided.

Film
The official film, O Sport, Ty Mir! (O Sport, You are Brave!) was directed by Yuri Ozerov. The 120-minute film was released in 1981 and is available on video.
