The BBC acquired an early Ampex 1000 videotape recorder, which was installed at the BBC Research Department at Kingswood Warren in Surrey, rather than the production studios at Lime Grove, London. At the time, the BBC was embarked on its own research programme on Vision Electronic Recording Apparatus (VERA), unlike which the Ampex machine did not require the wearing of white coats!
