January 5  French public broadcaster France Télévisions ceases to carry advertising between 20:00 and 06:00 on its national networks (France 2, France 3 and France 5) and the digial channel France 4.  
February 13  In the US Disney Channel launches Disney XD, a channel aimed at boys aged seven to 14. This replaces Toon Disney.  
February 17  This was the deadline for all full-power television stations in the US to cease analogue transmissions and broadcast only in digital. > 12 June
March 11  UK government confirms that the ban on product placement in television programmes is to continue.  
end March  Pioneer Electronics ends all production of LaserDisc players. The company has also started to close flat-screen television production facilities, intending to withdraw from the television completely within a year.  
March  Blu-ray Discs, MP4 players and Freeview set-top boxes are included by the Office of National Statistics (ONS) in the basket of items used to calculate the UK inflation rate.  
March  Australian broadcaster Network Ten launches One HD, a 24-hour high-definition sports channel, replacing the simulcast Ten HD.  
March  Time Warner Cable (TWC) is spun off from its former parent Time Warner, which previously held 84 per cent of the business and receives over $9bn in the process. TWC is now the largest US cable operator with a single class of stockholder. > 2006 July 31
May 29  UK regulator Ofcom inroducews new rules about television advertising.  
June 12  After delaying the deadline for broadcasters to end analogue television broadcasts, the US Congress sets this as the new earliest date for analogue switch-off (ASO).  
June 23  Irish sports broadcaster Setanta Sport goes into administration after failing to pay installments for the rights to English and Scottish premier league football matches. The rights are taken over by Walt Disney-owned ESPN.  
July 2  Under new rules published by the European Commission new services proposed by public service broadcasters must be assessed for their likely impact before being launched.  
July  UK Film Council allocates £1.2m of lottery funding to upgrade rural cinemas to full digital projection standards. The Rural Cinema Pilot Scheme is to concentrate initially in Shropshire, Wiltshire and North Yorkshire—three areas identified by the UKFC as under-screened.
August 24  Argentina adopts SBTVD-T, the Brazilian version of Japan’s ISDB-T standard, for its digital terrestrial television (DTT) network.  
September  BBC iPlayer catch-up programme service is available on Sony's PlayStation 3 (PS3) games console.  
October 31  Denmark switches off all analogue terrestrial television transmissions.  
December 2  Technical launch of Freeview HD from Arqiva's UK transmitters at Crystal Palace and Winter Hill. > 2010 March 30
